The Mission Committee oversees the many mission opportunities sponsored by FUMC. Every church member is encouraged to be active in any of the projects during the year. These are areas where our members often volunteer:
Limestone County Churches Involved: This is an orginazation consisting of volunteers from over 30 churches. LCCI provides emergency food, general assistance and Christian counseling to the families and individuals of Limestone County. Several small church groups, Sunday School classes, and individuals from our church make food donations to LCCI and assist with LCCI throughout the year. Jerry Boyd is the Volunteer Coordinator. Ida Terry, Jayne Ann Higginbotham, and Anne Carter are members who would be happy to discuss this effort in more detail. Volunteers are always needed in various areas of this service. For more information, call 256-262-0671.
Habitat for Humanity: The new ReStore is always in need of volunteers at any time for any length of time. Different home-building projects are announced as they are needed. Mary Pat Martin or Buddy Carter will be glad to answer questions about how any church member can help with this group. For more information, call 256-230-6001. This is the local website for Habitat for Humanity.
Care Assurance System for the Anging and Homebound (CASA): This group helps to assist eldery and disabled persons so that they may continue to live at home and preserve their independence. Deloris Thompson is the Volunteer Coordinator. Sanders Woodroof and Marion Williams have been involved and can let you know how and when assistance with CASA projects are needed. For more information, call 256-232-5751 or visit the Limestone County CASA website.
Hospice of Limestone County: Pam Smith is the Volunteer Coordinator, and there are many ways to volunteer. Mac Graham is a long-time volunteer at Hospice, and he or Pam can give you ideas on how you may be of service in this area. Hospice of Limestone County is the only local non-profit hospice in Limestone county. For more information, call 256-232-5017 or visit the Hospice of Limestone County website.
Department of Human Resources: Jennifer White is the Volunteer Coordinator for the communtity services projects at DHR. Water for Water: In this recent unique project of Athens FUMC, specially labeled bottled water is being sold to raise money to build a water purification plant near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. This purification plant would provide clean drinking water to the entire community. This project also serves to raise awareness of the need for clean drinking water world-wide. Mark Jackson will be glad to let you know how you can volunteer for this project. For more information, please call the church office at 256-232-2020. A case of water may be purchased for $20 at our church to benefit this special project.
Boys and Girls Club: Suzanne Rainey is the Executive Director and can give you more details if you would like to volunteer at this location. For more information, call 256-232-5545 or visit the national Boys and Girls Club website.
Methodist Children’s Home: The White Christmas offering is one way our church supports this home. Donations can also be made throughout the year to help with costs of sending children to summer camp. In addition, our donations help the staff with simple but special events for the children such as movie nights and trips to the mall.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing: This is a seasonal activity performed leading up to the Christmas season. Sign up sheets are posted on the mission bulletin board for participation.
Salvation Army Angel Tree: Our church sponsors approximately 100 children each Christmas during this drive. The Angel Trees are found within the church at the Christmas season with information about donating to our local children in need.
District Disaster Warehouse: This organization has periodic projects that receive our church’s assistance. Volunteers are welcomed for various work.
Mission Trips: Various trips are planned from year to year.
Tornado Relief: FUMC continues to provide on-going relief since the April Tornadoes damaged Limestone and surrounding counties. Bill Dunnavant is our relief coordinator. If you wish to volunteer for tornado relief activities as they are scheduled, Bill may be reached through the church office.
Faith Ministry: This ministry helps to build houses in northern Mexico within the cities of Miguel Aleman and Reynosa. These projects are similar to our local Habitat for Humanity projects. Teams have worked on as many as three houses during a week long trip. More information can be found on the Faith Ministry website.
Blood Drives: These occur throughout the year as needed.
