Missions

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations

Matthew 28:19

The Mission Committee oversees the many mission opportunities sponsored by FUMC. Every church member is encouraged to be active in any of the projects during the year. These are areas where our members often volunteer:

Limestone County Churches Involved:
This is an organization consisting of volunteers from over 30 churches. LCCI provides emergency food, general assistance, and Christian counseling to the families and individuals of Limestone County. Several small church groups, Sunday School classes, and individuals from our church make food donations to LCCI and assist with LCCI throughout the year. Jerry Boyd is the Volunteer Coordinator. Ida Terry, Jayne Ann Higginbotham, and Anne Carter are members who would be happy to discuss this effort in more detail. Volunteers are always needed in various areas of this service.

For more information, call 256-262-0671.

Hospice of Limestone County:
Pam Smith is the Volunteer Coordinator, and there are many ways to volunteer. Mac Graham is a long-time volunteer at Hospice, and he or Pam can give you ideas on how you may be of service in this area. Hospice of Limestone County is the only local non-profit hospice in Limestone county. For more information, call 256-232-5017 or visit the Hospice of Limestone County website.

Department of Human Resources:
Jennifer White is the Volunteer Coordinator for the community services projects at DHR. Maggie Tomlin and Claire Jones are members who can let you know how your help is needed throughout the year and during special seasons at DHR.

For more information, call 256-216-6380.

Boys and Girls Club:
Suzanne Rainey is the Executive Director and can give you more details if you would like to volunteer at this location.

For more information, call 256-232-5545 or visit the national Boys and Girls Club website.

Methodist Children’s Home:
The White Christmas offering is one way our church supports this home. Donations can also be made throughout the year to help with the costs of sending children to summer camp. In addition, our donations help the staff with simple but special events for the children such as movie nights and trips to the mall.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing:
This is a seasonal activity performed leading up to the Christmas season. Sign up sheets are posted on the mission bulletin board for participation.

Salvation Army Angel Tree:
Our church sponsors approximately 100 children each Christmas during this drive. The Angel Trees are found within the church during the Christmas season with information about donating to our local children in need.

District Disaster Warehouse:
This organization has periodic projects that receive our church’s assistance. Volunteers are welcomed for various work.

Mission Trips:
Various trips are planned from year to year.

Tornado Relief:
Athens First United Methodist Church continues to provide on-going relief since the April Tornadoes damaged Limestone and surrounding counties. Bill Dunnavant is our relief coordinator. If you wish to volunteer for tornado relief activities as they are scheduled, Bill may be reached through the church office.

Strong Faith Ministry:
This ministry helps to build houses in northern Mexico within the cities of Miguel Aleman and Reynosa. These projects are similar to our local Habitat for Humanity projects. Teams have worked on as many as three houses during a week-long trip. More information can be found on the Faith Ministry website.

Blood Drives:
These occur throughout the year as needed.

Sound & Media:
This ministry ensures all media, sound and production happens each service.

First Light Greeter:
This ministry ensures a friendly face is at the door and greets every person that visits our church. Our greeters are also available to answer visitors’ questions and extend extra help in seating those who need assistance.

First Light Donuts:
Does your family want to start volunteering together?

Would you love to get your younger kids to start volunteering or do your older teens need those high school hours? Hosting DONUTS is a great way!

This is a fabulous way to introduce your children to give back and great option if you don’t have a lot of time to volunteer. It takes less than an hour of your time!

This ministry provides four dozen assortments of donuts to go along with our hot served coffee.

Traditional Service Usher:
The usher serves as a “first representative” of Jesus Christ for our worship services. Before the church service starts, the ushers will often have the responsibility to check the thermostat, check the restrooms, and prepare the bulletins for distribution. As churchgoers arrive, the ushers will act as doorkeepers, greeting each person with a smile, shaking hands, and handing out bulletins. They are also available to answer visitors’ questions and extend extra help in seating those who need assistance.

During the church service, the ushers usually take part in some way. They are responsible to take up the church offering and make sure it is put in the proper place.
