WELCOME

Athens First Methodist Church is a place where people can meet Jesus,  engage in life-giving community, and everyone is welcome. We believe in creating a space where people can have authentic encounters with Christ, discover their gifts and use them for God's glory.

Join us for our Sunday services!

WHAT TO EXPECT

The contemporary service is at 8:50 and the traditional service is at 11:00. The contemporary service meets in an auditorium atmosphere (rows of separate moveable chairs) with a band on a stage and lyrics displayed on a screen behind the band. The music is typically popular Christian music.

The traditional service meets in the sanctuary with standard rows of pews and a choir loft behind the pulpit. The music includes traditional hymns sung by the congregation and choir as well as an anthem sung by the choir. Our pastor delivers the same sermon for both services.
Anything from very casual attire (even shorts) to coat and tie for men and dresses for women.

Yes. We do at the 8:50 service.
We are delighted to welcome your child into our nursery located on the 1st floor. Nursery care is offered during all worship services and during Sunday School. The age limit is from 0 to 4 years old. During Sunday School, the nursery is offered for those under 2, as classes are provided for 2-year-olds and up. The nursery is divided into infants, creepers (crawlers), toddlers (beginning walkers), and runabouts (fully mobile). All nursery workers are First Aid and CPR certified. For the comfort of your child, we ask that you bring a bag with them each time they attend the nursery with 3-4 diapers, a labeled juice cup, and a pacifier if needed. Snacks will be provided. You will sign your child into the nursery. A paging device will be given to the parent to use in the event it becomes necessary for you to return to the nursery.
The main education building is attached to the church sanctuary. Children meet on the ground floor. Adult classes meet on the third floor. Older children meet in the Beasley Center across the street on Bryan Street, behind the church. The youth meet in the Youth Building, across from the church on Jefferson Street. A guide for the Sunday School classes with the meeting sites is located here.
Using the Bible and other material, we seek to help our members grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
We are Christians. Our church motto is "To Seek, To Serve, and to Share Christ." Methodist beliefs are similar to many protestant denominations. A detailed description of the Methodist beliefs is beyond the scope of this question, but our pastor is happy to discuss this topic in more detail with anyone who desires to learn more.
In the United Methodist Church, holy communion is open to all who desire to receive it, adults and children alike. In our church, those who wish to receive communion are led by pew to the altar in the traditional service or the auditorium's front in First Light. Alternatively, if you wish for the communion to be brought to you, please notify an usher. Grape juice (in separate small cups) and bread are then given to anyone who wishes to participate in holy communion. This symbolizes the body and the blood of Christ, which is given for us, helping us to be Christ's body in the world today, redeemed by Christ's blood. We pray over the bread and the juice that they may make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in service to the world. Communion is given approximately once per month.
